Business Tips for New WAHM’s

Posted on 11. Dec, 2009 by Mary Lutz in WAHM Biz Tips

Since entering the work at home mom realm a year and a half ago, I thought I would share some of the things I’ve learned along the way to help other or new work at home moms (and dads or persons) too. These tips are also good for anyone building an online business.

What to do

  • Get your name out there. As with any business, marketing is the first step to letting the world know you exist. Get some business cards made and carry them with you wherever you go. People you haven’t seen in a while always ask, “So, what are you doing these days”, or something along those lines. You never know when they might have a need for your services or products. Also, get on Twitter, Facebook, Linked In and Stumble Upon and start networking with others in the same line of business and with those who are likely to require your services.

  • Ask for the business: If your business is service based, don’t be afraid to ask for some business. Get on Twitter and Facebook, make some friends with those who need your services and ask them for business. You might not always get a positive response, but it helps to get your name in their minds, and who knows…as your business, name and brand grows, they may just hire you in the future.
  • Build relationships. As I stated in the tip above, make friends with your peers and even your competition. Give them some link love in your blog posts, Re-Tweet their posts and comment on their blogs. Of course be sincere about it and focus on building the relationship.
  • Join a mastermind group. No matter what business you’re in, there are experts in your field who have been there, done that and they can help you avoid mistakes as well as help you learn what TO do to get your business off the ground and running. For work at home mom’s I highly recommend Mom Masterminds. Mom Mastermind’s is a networking group filled with moms from all walks of life and successfully running their businesses. Some are just getting started and some are well seasoned full of advice, tips and suggestions that they love to share. In addition to all the great advice and learning resources you will find, a mastermind group is also a great place to network.
  • Use WordPress for your blog or site on your own domain. I recommend Mom Webs for your domain and hosting needs. If you need help setting up your domain and blog/website, check out my VA services. In addition if you would like to learn more about WordPress I recommend WordPress Orientation.

These are just a few tips of the basic tips to help you get started in your work at home business. Oh, also if you’re not sure what type of work at home business you’d like to start, check out Mom’s Talk Network for a full list of work at home ideas.
